Accountable Talk
As a student teacher, I try to find new ways that get our students to talk and engage with the content. Implementing accountable talk in our stations and classroom discussions has created a welcoming environment for students to share their thoughts and ideas while feeling supported in the classroom.
Accountable Talk Sentence Starters- providing the students with sentence starters benefit students that struggle to put their thoughts into words.
ex. I agree with___ because…, I disagree with______ because…
I think that __________ will happen because… I don’t think that __________ will happen because… I wonder if…
Since this happened, then what if… Based on …, I infer that ….
Benefits- common purpose and clear expectations - students understand what they are working towards and why it matters. Accountable talk allows students to understand what they are learning and what success looks like. Students are able to defend and argue their way of thinking in a respectful and meaningful manner.
